Versatile Verfaillie: from markings to LED lights

2 September 2022
You probably already knew that Verfaillie-Leroy in Ieper knows everything about the art of making road signs. But their expertise in signposting goes far beyond that. In this article, we show this by means of two recent projects.

The Verfaillie-Leroy marking team was given the opportunity to work in Koolskamp, Ardooie for a number of vegetable processing companies that have been clients since the 1990s. Before the companies' frozen food hall was brought back down to -24°C, the team ensured that the large cold storage warehouse was freshly lined. Over two days, 2,600 metres of line were drawn on the ground of the refrigeration hall to mark 216 compartments. Each compartment was also given a number.

Geert Verfaillie, Business Unit Manager Signalisation, tells us how they went about it: "We started with the optimal layout of the compartments so that our client could store as many vegetable trays next to each other as possible. The polished concrete surface first had to be shot-blasted, otherwise the paint would not adhere. After shot blasting with dust extraction, we applied the lines in two-component road paint. Finally, the paint had to cure for another 24 hours and then the cold store could be used again."

Every few years, when the figures in the refrigerated compartments start to wear off, Verfaillie also provides a refresh. For this refresh, the cold store is not temporarily returned to a higher temperature, but the team wears a special freezer suit and works with adapted paint.

Warning lights on zebra crossings

In Gullegem, Verfaillie-Leroy demonstrated its expertise in lighting and reflective applications. They installed 28 LED lights in the ground for contractor Cnockaert to make pedestrian crossings more visible and thus improve pedestrian safety. Verfaillie-Leroy itself is a distributor of the solar-powered warning LEDs.

First, the team plotted the exact placement of the LED pods, then they drilled the holes in the asphalt and, finally, the LEDs were fixed in mounting adhesive. The biggest challenge with this project was to minimise disruption to through traffic. They worked quickly and were able to complete the job completely in one working day.

All-round and ambitious

Within the team of Verfaillie-Leroy, everyone has their own specialisations. Together, they form an all-round signalling company. Geert Verfaillie explains why it is important for them to have multiple areas of expertise within the signalling industry and to be versatile: "We are a smaller but close team and we all like to do varied work. We like a challenge where we can use our different specialities to provide a suitable answer to every situation."
