From train driver to water technician: at APK Group, career progression isn't just a possibility, it's a reality. Eddy shares his story about how he found his place, left, and eventually returned to APK Groupwith complete conviction.

Eddie: “Good communication opens doors and gets you where you want to be.”

Meet Eddy: formerly a train driver, today an experienced water technician. Eddy started five years ago at APK Group, where he specialised in groundwork with heavy machinery. But after a period of uncertainty and changes in his work environment, he decided to take a different path. Yet, his career journey eventually led him back to APK Group.

“At one point I felt like I wanted to work somewhere else,” says Eddy. “But after two years, I noticed that the work atmosphere and opportunities at APK Group suited me better after all. That's why I decided to return.”

Why go back to APK Group?

For Eddy, the choice to return was a conscious one: “It’s not just about the job itself, but also about the people you work with. I have a good bond with colleagues here and I know my work is appreciated.”

As a water technician, Eddy has a dynamic role: “Every day I have contact with people who need a water connection. That means a lot of explaining and ensuring that everything functions correctly. That variety and customer contact make my job so fascinating.”

The step from driver to water technician

Eddy's career change was gradual. “I've always been interested in machines, but eventually I became more and more involved with the technical side of water connections. I learned a lot from colleagues and was given the chance to prove myself.”

What motivates him? “Autonomy. I love to take responsibility and do my work in my own way. That's fulfilling.”

Eddy has a clear message for new colleagues: “Communication is everything. If you want to get anywhere in your career, you have to dare to speak up. Say what you want and show commitment.”

In his new role, Jonas is not only responsible for execution but also for the planning, communication with stakeholders, and financial follow-up of projects. “It's a very versatile job: I'm the bridge between the technical execution, the administration, and the client. That makes it incredibly fascinating.”

From student to work planner: at APK Group it's not just about technical knowledge, but also about a willingness to learn and adaptability. Dennis shares his story about how he entered the sector and developed within the company.

Dennis: “Here you get the chance to be truly involved in the entire process.”

Meet Dennis: formerly a student of Communication & Multimedia Design, today a project planner at APK Group. His path wasn't laid out in advance, but he found his calling in a dynamic and challenging role.

“After my studies, there was little demand in my field. I was approached through my network for a position as a planner and was introduced to the sector. I decided to give it a go, and I've never regretted it.”

From outsider to expert

Dennis started with no prior knowledge of the infrastructure world, but he learned quickly on the job. “The first few weeks were an intense learning experience. I gained insight into the processes and was immediately involved in projects. In a short period of time, I was given increasing responsibility.”

As a project planner, Dennis ensures that projects are well-prepared from start to finish. “We receive orders and distribute the work among the right contractors. I'm responsible for the planning, liaising with colleagues, and keeping an eye on costs. It's a very varied role where you liaise with many different people.”

What makes this job so interesting?

For Dennis, it's primarily the versatility that appeals to him. “You're involved in the entire process, from preparation to execution. No two days are the same, and that makes the work incredibly engaging.”

He also values the collaboration within the team. “Everyone is ready to help, and you can always turn to colleagues with questions. That open working atmosphere ensures that you grow quickly in your role.”

Advice for new APKs

Dennis has a clear message for new colleagues: “Be resilient to stress and dare to ask questions. You don't need to know everything straight away, but taking initiative is the quickest way to learn. And most importantly: don't be afraid to juggle multiple things at once, because that's part of the job!”
