Electricity network of the future in Huldenberg

12 September 2024
APK Group has started grid reinforcement work in Huldenberg. The project is part of a wider collaboration with grid operator Fluvius, in which APK Group will reinforce at least 225 kilometres of Flemish electricity grids over the next five years. This will give more space to solar panels, electric vehicles, heat pumps and many other green solutions. Huldenberg is spearheading this agreement and will count over 6 kilometres of reinforced power connections by mid-October. As a renowned partner in infrastructure projects, we are proud to be building the electricity network of the future together with Fluvius!
The energy network of the future, faster than ever

At April 2024 APK Group and grid operator Fluvius teamed up for a minimum period of five years, with APK Group joining forces in the first phase for some 225 kilometres of power grids will strengthen. Now we are putting our money where our mouth is, as the first shovel was put into the ground at the beginning of September. Specifically, additional 400-volt cables will be laid in several streets, which will reinforce the current low-voltage networks. Customers can connect to these extra cables as soon as they need them, for instance for loading installations, heat pumps or solar panels. At the same time, we also new fibre-optic cables on.

"Whereas in other grid reinforcements we replace about 50 to 60 metres of grid cables a day, here our employees work on about 100 to 150 metres every day."

"What makes this tender so special is that we work a lot faster here than in other tenders," says Johan Suykens, service head of grid transition at Fluvius. "Whereas in other grid reinforcements we replace about 50 to 60 metres of grid cables per day, here our employees work on about 100 to 150 metres every day."

Projects in three zones

Huldenberg is the starting point of this large-scale renewal, but we will also provide other Flemish municipalities with reinforced grids in the coming months. "For 2024 and 2025, we have scheduled several projects in three zones," says Sam De Bruyn, Business Unit Manager Infra. "We are starting in the zone Hageland-Dijle, with Huldenberg as its starting point. This will be followed by Landen and Lubbeek. At the end of September we will start in South Limburg, more specifically in Dilsen-Stokkem and Hoeselt. From January 2025, the region will be Zenne-Dender on the agenda."

Commitment high on the agenda

As experts in synergy projects, we contribute cooperate high priority. "In this work too, we strive to maintain the municipality involved as closely as possible in our work," De Bruyn continues. "For instance, we went over all projects with the municipal administration at the design stage. We also like to keep in touch with the surrounding area: residents receive letters with a QR code, allowing them to easily assess the quality of the works. This feedback is of great value to us. It allows us to monitor the project properly and helps us make future sites even more efficient."
